What is it called when a person becomes too emotionally attached to their pets to the point of exclusivity?

Can humans become overly attached to their pets? Can it be a determent to their psychological well-being?

Chosen Answer:

I’m like this LOL. I have a dog and two cats, and my friends think I am too attached to them. I love animals more than I love people. I am an activist and a true animal lover. And I think I am a well-adjusted person.

Some people love their animals with a small l; some love their animals with a big L. I guess it’s just not socially acceptable, so people may view them as odd. Also, if someone if very close with their pets, it may affect their relationships with others and/or prevent them from starting new relationships. But if the person is truly happy, then I guess it isn’t a problem. It would be problematic, however, if a person was close to their animals just to avoid humans (maybe trust issues). I think this is evident in animal hoarders.
